CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Pounding feet can hardly be heard over the sounds of the Corpus Christi Bay

About 3 days a week, Coach Laura Brennan leads the race in her very own running club.

“My passion for running made me want to have the kids run year-round instead of just during the school year,” said Brennan.

For an hour each morning, she has kids from across the Corpus Christi area meet at the bayfront, where as a team they do a variety of work outs to stay active, motivated, and challenged during the summer months.

“Jump squats, mountain climbers, plank jack switches, jumping lunges, and flutters,” said Brennan.

And best of all, it's free!

“There's a lot of programs out there that maybe cost a lot of money that the kids maybe can't afford or it's just more stress on them,” said Brennan.

During the school year Brennan coaches athletics and the running club at Baker Middle School.

Her running club is sponsored by Marathon Kids, an organization dedicated to helping kids lead healthier lives.

Her students can track their running progress and are rewarded for every 26.2 miles, or marathon, with incentives to push them to go further.

“They get cool Nike t-shirts, bracelets, shoe laces, and it teaches them to set goals,” said Brennan.

Her summer running program isn't tied to Marathon Kids. But she says that's what allows the community to be a part of it, that includes parents, siblings, or anyone really.

Her challenge for everyone is to just give it a shot.
