CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — As they prepare to head back to school, kids from across town will have a chance to grab free school supplies at the 8th annual Back-To-School Health & Safety Fair.

“The purpose is to get our kids ready for school and to make sure they have the tools and the resources they need to start a successful school year,” said CCPD Captain Jason Brady.

But the Corpus Christi Police Athletic League needs your help.

The organization needs money to purchase school supplies for nearly 3000 students this coming school year.

Brady says the non-profit organization raises funds throughout the year to buy supplies in bulk for families in need.

“There's no money that we make it’s not for police training and it’s not for any police equipment,” said Brady. “It’s strictly for these supplies and the different information we provide to the kids.”

This year, kids will get backpacks filled with supplies at an event called Operation Safe Return which will be held on July 27th. Along with the backpacks, there will be other incentives to help families offset the costs of getting their kids ready for the school year.

“It’s not just rulers and paper anymore now there’s a lot of audio and visual media and stuff and they want the kids to have their own headphones,” said Brady. “There's vouchers for free haircuts, and we provide physicals that are required for most of the athletic programs.”

The event relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses for support and since they can buy supplies in bulk they only need monetary donations.

And all donations are tax deductible. For more information on how you can help or attend the event you can visit: https://www.cctexas.com/departments/police-department/operation-safe-return

The event will be held July 27th from 10 AM to 2 PM at the American Bank Center.
