CCISD is following the lead of local colleges and universities, extending its Spring Break through March 20.

Classes are expected to resume March 23.

"While we cannot require students and their families to stay in the area, we strongly recommend doing so to help ensure a safe environment when schools reopen," the statement reads.

The district said in a statement that it will use the extra time to deep clean its schools and facilities and "implement additional measures to foster good health."

"We take seriously our role in safeguarding public health, and our responsibility to help our area remain a low-risk environment," the statement reads. "Out of an abundance of caution, CCISD will remain closed the week of March 16. Local extracurricular activities will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis."

Employees will be expected to stay in the area, and the district said it will be in touch with staff to consult on work schedules.

A statement released Thursday said they will examine extracurricular activities on a case-by-case basis, and an FAQ and regular updates will be provided on its website.

Parents with specific questions are invited to contact the district at communications@ccisd.us. CCISD said it will not respond to specific questions but will update the FAQ section with topics raised.

Thank you for your patience during this new and challenging situation. I want to assure you we will continue to move forward thoughtfully while prioritizing the safety of our staff, students and families.

We take seriously our role in safeguarding public health, and our responsibility to help our area remain a low-risk environment. Out of an abundance of caution, CCISD will remain closed the week of March 16. Local extracurricular activities will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

During the extended break, we will deep-clean all properties and implement additional measures to foster good health.

Later today, and on Friday, supervisors will be in touch with staff to provide information regarding work schedules. All employees are expected remain in the Coastal Bend during the extended break.

While we cannot require students and their families to stay in the area, we strongly recommend doing so to help ensure a safe environment when schools reopen.

I know many of you will have questions related to our change in schedule as well as the steps we are taking to safeguard against illness. We will continue to keep you informed, including placing regular updates and a FAQ on our website beginning Friday, March 13. If you have specific questions you would like us to address, please email communications@ccisd.us. While we will not be able to answer individual emails, we will use the topics you raise to update our FAQ.

I urge everyone to follow guidance given by the CDC to minimize the spread of contagious illnesses, including frequent hand-washing and staying home when ill.

Additionally, I want to thank everyone at the county, the city and the health district for their assistance.
