As we continue to get through 2020, we're realizing that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought on many stresses in our lives, from financial matters to personal troubles. With some people still uneasy about going into a doctor's office, or unable to afford professional counseling, some of those stresses aren't being treated.

"There has been an influx in depression and anxiety, and we have family members who have lost their jobs, and community members who are trying to seek employment again," said Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi Clinic Director Dr. Kimberlee Mincey. "And that's really hard."

Whether you need to vent about everyday issues, or there's a more significant psychological problem that you need to talk to someone about, there are free resources available. Dr. Mincey said anyone can call into the clinic at the Clinic and Training Center at TAMU-CC and receive counseling help from any of the counseling students. Sessions can be held via Zoom meeting or over the phone.

"There's still this thought of, well, just get over it," Mincey said. "While that might help, it's not always the answer. It's not always the perfect solution for every single person."

TAMU-CC is not the only place you can receive free therapy sessions. The Ecumenical Center has 27 locations in Texas, with licensed counselors available to speak at any time.

"We are here for you and your mental health and your growth," said counselor Taylor Feldmann, who said said she's noticed an uptick in calls since the pandemic began.

When asked why organizations are offering free services she said, there can never be enough free resources for mental health.

"The more that we have, the better, because there are so many people within the community that don't have access," she said. "Or even if they do: Is it really realistic for them to go out and receive those services?"

Feldmann believes talking to someone everyday can make an impactful difference; she said it's all about getting the issues off of your mind, and knowing someone is hearing you.

TAMU-CC Counseling and Training Clinic and The Ecumenical Center are offering their services for free as the pandemic continues.

In order to reach a counselor, call the clinic's number, leave a voicemail, and a counselor will get in touch about scheduling a therapy session. Sessions can last anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes.

The TAMU-CC Counseling and Training Clinic Hotline can ben reached at 361-825-3988, and the Ecumenical Center at 361-249-3080.
