High-school football workouts continue all over the Coastal Bend, and over at Corpus Christi’s King High School, the Mustangs’ workouts are being overseen by a new coach who is teaching his new team to be confident.

Doug Foster has coached for more than 20 years; King is his third stop as a head coach.

You would think being new, trying to install a new offense and defense, and dealing with COVID-19 issues which limited his team's offseason conditioning, Foster might be a little stressed with opening night just more than two weeks away.

Oh no. Not with this man

“Our outlook is: We are going to be as good as we can make ourselves,” he said. “We are going to push ourselves to be at the time we need to be there. I am always going to have a positive outlook on it, so we are right now where we want to be, and I firmly believe that.”

Well, his players certainly are buying in: They love what they have seen so far.

“We have a harder work ethic,” said Mustangs running back Josiah King. “The coaches are way harder than they were last year on us. We are working hard just trying to compete this year and go to the playoffs.”

“It is definitely different from what we did last year and what we are used to, but coach Foster is a really good coach and knows what he is talking about,” said King quarterback Benjamin Stewart. “I think we have more depth in our offense as in the past years and so that's always a plus for us.”

And everyone hopes it all translates into more wins this season.

The Mustangs’ season kicks off Sept. 25, when they travel to Pleasanton.
