A Democrat, who was also running for office in California, won last night's primary race for congressional District 27th seat here in Texas.
Ricardo de la Fuente, who did not spend time campaigning here, defeated Corpus Christi businessman Charlie Jackson.
De la Fuente will face incumbent Michael Cloud in November.
So what's next for local Democrats as we move toward November?
They say they were surprised, but now that he's the nominee they'll back him as they would any other Democrat.
De la Fuente ran in the Texas 27th, as well as the California 21st.
He was unsuccesful there, so he said he'll focus his efforts here now.
De la Fuente said his family has owned property in Victoria for a decade, so he's familiar with the district.
He feels the district's demographics call for a strong, Latino representative.
"My main concern is there's a lot of districts where there's a majority of Latinos, and they don't have a Latino candidate or Latino representation," De la Fuente said. "I'm very happy with the result, and I look forward to challenging Michael Cloud in the general election."
De la Fuente said he plans on spending more time in the district leading up to November.
The law says he has to be a resident by the day before Election Day. He said he plans to establish residency sooner.
