Joseph Anderson is one of the many Nueces Co. employees who helps keep coastal parks clean. His days are spent picking up trash at Bob Hall Pier and various RV parks managed by the county.
His job may not seem glamorous, but Anderson said his is the best office in the city.
"You're right there on the beach," he said. "It is good, honest, hard work, but you are still on the beach. The wind is blowing on you and you can hear the waves."
Summer has arrived, and as Texas continues to reopen, many will travel to the Coastal Bend to enjoy our beaches during vacations.
"The crowds that we are seeing are equal or greater than a holiday weekend crowd and this is every weekend," said Nueces Co. Coastal Parks Director Scott Cross.
Visitors in town are creating a greater need for workers at our coastal parks. Cross said he plans to hire 11-12 seasonal positions, such as office clerks or maintenance workers, to help typical employees such as Anderson during the suummer. The jobs listings can be found here .
"I'm basically going to load up on all those seasonal positions that I can afford in my budget," he said.
Seasonal positions are temporary, and would most likely end after Labor Day weekend in September. In the meantime, however, the jobs pay about $13 an hour, and each job is full-time work, 40 hours per week.
Anderson began with the county's maintenance team in February.
"I've always enjoyed coming to the beach, fishing," he said.
Other duties for the maintenance crew involves turtle patrol, plumbing, picking up trash and much more. For the team, it is about making sure people enjoy the beach.
"There's a lot more to it than just the bathrooms and the pier trash," he said. "We do everything we can to make this the best experience for people."
