Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is a childhood staple. Kids love mac and cheese, and they love ice cream. So why not combine the two?
Crazy as it may sound, that’s exactly what Kraft has done with its limited-edition Kraft macaroni and cheese-flavored ice cream. Created in partnership with Brooklyn-based Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, the inventive flavor debuted in July 2021 and was sold at Van Leeuwen scoop shops around the country.
Now, however, the unique treat will be much more accessible for fans of mac and cheese and/or ice cream across the U.S. Starting March 10, the mac and cheese-flavored ice cream was reportedly rolled out to 3,500 Walmart stores and it will be available as part of a 10-week rotation that will also include several other flavors, like bourbon cherries jubilee and pizza.
Reviews of the flavor have been surprisingly positive. According to one writer at the Food Network, the flavor is creamy, cheesy, sweet and “unexpectedly enjoyable.” Insider found it rich and “delightfully tangy.” And Eater’s review was glowing, acknowledging that “gimmicky” food mashups like this don’t always work, but this one knocked it out of the park.
“Salty-sweet is an unbeatable flavor combination, and that’s exactly what’s going on here,” the Eater reviewer wrote.
“We know that there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream,” Emily Violett, senior associate brand manager for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, said in a press release at the time of the ice cream’s original launch. “That is why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese we all grew up with.”
