Tropical Depression 3 has become Tropical Storm Cristobal, which is forming in the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center has upgraded the depression in the Gulf to Cristobal, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 40 mph.

Tropical Depression Three has strengthened to the third tropical storm, Cristobal, of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. It is located he the southwestern Gulf of Mexico about 150 miles west-southwest of Campeche, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

Tropical Storm Warnings were in effect for Campeche to Puerto de Veracruz in Mexico on Tuesday morning, with tropical storm conditions expected within 24 to 36 hours.

Current forecasts take the system into the Central Gulf by Friday and into the Central Gulf Coast over the coming weekend. Most likely landing somewhere between Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle.

With the upgrade to a tropical storm, a new record has been set for the Atlantic basin.
