Officials with the City of Corpus Christi held a news conference regarding the ongoing repairs to the Yorktown Mud Bridge located in the 8600 block of Yorktown Boulevard on Wednesday.

City Manager Peter Zanoni said the repairs on the Mud Bridge are right on track, and the bridge should be open in approximately 70 days if weather permits, as work crews have begun working on Phase Two of the bridge.

According to Zanoni, upon further inspection, engineers discovered that half of the columns on the bridge have deteriorated. Work on the substructure will begin immediately as the columns need to be restructured.

Officials also revealed that two barges under the bridge need to be repaired as well. Public Works, Ernesto De La Garza, said the barges are en route, and crews will begin the underwater repairs as soon as the new barges arrive.

"We asked the question of whether or not it will be the wisest decision for the taxpayer. And the answer is yes, it is. We're going to get it open. With the cost of about $3,000,000," said Peter Zanoni.

TxDOT will replace the whole bridge starting in 2025, along with design and engineering services.

Drivers in Corpus Christi can expect to see the Yorktown Mud Bridge reopen by early April. City leaders were briefed on the bridge's repair efforts during Tuesday's city council meeting.

As KRIS 6 first reported, the bridge shut down on Dec. 12 when a sinkhole was discovered. City leaders expected work to be complete by mid to late March, but that's now been pushed back to April.

Right now, crews are working on restoring the embankment along the bridge, which city officials said that is expected to be complete by next week.

After that, 22 of the 55 concrete columns will need to be repaired or replaced. The city hopes to have that complete by April 6 so the bridge can reopen to drivers.

Though the $20 million Mud Bridge replacement project was set to begin in 2026, TXDOT officials have approved moving funding so the project can start sooner. Bidding and planning for construction is expected to begin in Jan. 2025.
