ALICE, Texas — A large fire in Alice closed part of Hwy. 44 and several neighborhoods were evacuated on Tuesday.

"Those were precautionary measures, some of the residents were a little nervous, as we were too, we had fire headed towards homes, we were pretty confidant we were going to be able to get control of it , once we could get our resources in place, we did , but we did do a voluntary fire evacuation for those neighborhoods," said Patrick Thomas, Alice FD Fire Chief.

Crews set up a command center on Hwy. 44 and McMaster Street.

According to the City of Alice, at around 6:07 p.m., the fire was 40% contained. Forty-five acres had been burned including three nonresidential buildings. No injuries have been reported at this time.

The Texas Forest Ground and Air Services are fighting the fire, along with crews from Alice FD, San Diego FD, Ben Bolt FD, Premont FD and Orange Grove FD.
