A long-time Corpus Christi resident celebrated her 100th birthday from a safe distance.
Gerda Richter was spending her Saturday afternoon in her front yard with her daughters when she was surprised with a parade on her home street.

Richter has seen a lot of changes since she was a young girl growing up during World War II. She was raised in Drumright, Oklahoma and was part of the Drumright High School Marching Band.
Her and her husband Steve, who passed away in 2002, spent their careers operating Snapka's Drive Inn on Weber. The 100-year-old plans to keep working as long as her health permits.
"Gerda had started as a carhop in 1956 to help out her sister and brother-in-law who opened the business, and later shared the managing duties with her husband," said daughter Susan Land in a press release. "Today, Gerda continues to manage the books."
Richter also stays busy with a few hobbies, like painting, quilting, and crocheting.
"Just this past Christmas, Gerda painted eight complete sets of canisters to give to family members and friends," said Land in a press release.
Richter also says she taught her employees an envelope budgeting system that helped them purchase vehicles and homes, before the system was promoted by entrepreneur Dave Ramsey.
