On Sunday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an order for all hospitals to postpone all surgeries that are not immediately and medically necessary.
Texas health care facilities also halted unnecessary surgeries to save resources and keep hospitals at a functional capacity in case a COVID-19 disaster were to arise in the area.
Coastal Bend resident Vanessa Nisbit was supposed to have a gastric bypass on Tuesday morning. After months of preparation, the medical procedure was postponed.
Nisbit says just four days before having gastric bypass her doctor called her and said, "Due to the virus, your surgery has been canceled. We cannot even reschedule right now, we don’t even know when we can reschedule just to due to everything going on."
Nisbit says she's even noticed extra security getting in and out of Bay Area Hospital.
KRIS 6 did contact Bay Area Hospital and Christus Spohn to get a statement and see what other changes they have implemented. As of this morning, we have not received any responses.
The executive order by Governor Abbott will remain in effect until April 21.
