Some consumer items that we all enjoy are known as luxuries – fashionable clothing, ice cream and coffee. However, there are other items we all need every day. Whether it’s clean water from the faucet or light that illuminates a dark room, these are absolute necessities.

Choosing a career that deals with people’s deep needs like this is a great way to secure a good future for yourself and your family. If you’re pondering your first career out of school, or even a career switch later, a career as an electrician is an excellent choice, but now and for the future.

Here are 5 reasons it’s a bright idea:

1. There’s always something interesting going on

Offices aren’t for everyone. If you crave a work environment that isn’t stagnant or the same each day, being an electrician is a rewarding change of pace from the typical corporate atmosphere. You’ll be in different job sites or different buildings for each job – never a dull moment – and you’ll meet plenty of people along the way.

2. Great, steady pay

Skilled electricians can make more than other workers in similar careers. Electrical workers, in fact, often make more per hour than welders, automobile mechanics, brick masons, HVAC technicians, truck drivers and others. Furthermore, there are ways to enhance your career in electricity through advanced training, earning more as a result.

3. The work is always changing

We live in a rapidly evolving world nowadays. Being an electrician means constantly researching and learning new ways of the trade. From the switch from incandescent light bulbs to LEDs to the growing use of solar energy, there are plenty of examples. If you’re the type who enjoys being challenged and solving problems, electricity might be the answer.

4. You’ll enjoy little to no student debt, and you won’t spend years in college

You probably have friends who attended advanced education at a university for years upon years to become physicians, attorneys and accountants, only to gripe for another long span of time about their student loans. As an electrical worker, you won’t be able to relate. Training is much more affordable, and can begin right after high school.

5. The field isn’t going anywhere

More and more experts are saying that we need more electricians. In fact, in the next decade, many existing homes and businesses will need rewiring and other electrical changes, but the number of qualified workers could be alarmingly small. A career as an electrician can mean plenty of work and job security in the future. After all, humans will always need light and power.
