“The crosswalk is there to protect the pedestrian," says officer Richard Olden.

Fatality accident investigator Richard Olden says the problem is that people ignore crosswalks even exist.  He says in his nearly 20 with the Corpus Christi Police Department, the cause of most accidents is always the same.  People ignoring the law.

“They think it's not going to happen to them and that's the whole issue,” says Olden.

Olden says the city is doing their part, with upgraded sidewalks and new technology.

"Pedestrian lights that control the pedestrian traffic," says Olden.

The sad truth, in just this year, six people have been killed in pedestrian accidents and more have been injured.

"It happens at least once a week," says Olden. "If they see what we see, they wouldn't do it.”

Olden says if people are patient and follow the law, officers can focus on serving and protecting the community.
