Driver hits police car, takes CCPD on chase

Posted: Updated:

An attempted traffic stop turned into a police chase early this morning, after the driver attempted to hit officers with their car.

Just after 1:30 a.m., Corpus Christi Police were conducting a traffic stop near Caravelle Parkway and Weber Road.

The car in question had an expired sticker, and the driver had taken a wide right turn.

When officers approached the vehicle, it took off.

CCPD followed in order to get a plate number, but were not going to chase the vehicle.

That all changed when the driver wrecked his vehicle, then attempted to hit officers after they approached to assist him.

He instead hit a parked vehicle, damaging his tires.

Corpus Christi Police followed the car at speeds up to nearly 60 miles per hour.

The driver later wrecks again, this time blowing out two of his tires completely.

When officers approached him a second time, the driver rammed a police unit with his vehicle.

No officers were injured, but it does appear that he cracked the police unit's radiator.

Police followed the car yet again, now joined by the Nueces County Sheriff's Department.

The driver, a Hispanic male, eventually bailed out of the car at the Starbucks on Saratoga Boulevard.

Police were able to arrest him on two charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, evading arrest, and three felony warrants.

Corpus Christi Police tell us that no one was on the streets at the time of the chase.

The driver was taken to the hospital as a precaution, since he had wrecked his vehicle multiple times.
