City museum remains closed for repairs

One popular Corpus Christi tourist and educational attraction won't be open in time for Spring Break.  The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History has been closed since Hurricane Harvey made its way through the Coastal Bend in late August of 2017.

The hurricane winds and rain caused floor and roof damage, leaks and mold.  Thankfully, none of the artifacts were damaged.

CCMJV is the private company that manages the building which is owned by the city.  Bill Durrill is president of CCMJV President and says they will not open up to the public again until the city, contractors, and management all agree it's completely safe.

"We had water penetrate through the front doors. And you can see the laminate bubbling up from the water damage," Durrill said.

One month after the hurricane hit, the museum opened but upon further inspections by city contractors, the facility closed in mid-October due to findings of mold.  During that short period it was open, The Classic Brew and other events were held.

A skeletal crew is currently working at the museum in areas where air quality has been deemed not harmful after testing.  They've been cleaning thousands of artifacts.

The city has authorized hundreds of thousands of dollars for the restoration instead of building a new museum.  Durrill says restoring is more cost effective than constructing a new building.

"The whole goal is to get it back open so that the public can enjoy their asset that they've got here, and we're just trying to make sure that we take the proper steps, that everything is being done correctly," he said.

There's no word how long that could take.
