Corpus Christi Firefighters out for 'Fill the Boot'

Posted: Updated:

It is once again time to help our local firefighters "Fill the Boot" on their mission to free kids and adults from the harm of muscular dystrophy, A-L-S and related life-threatening diseases.

Members of the Corpus Christi Professional Fire Fighters Association Local #936 with the Muscular Dystrophy Association will fan out across Corpus Christi for the next 3 Fridays with boots in hand for the fire fighters' annual campaign.

“We as firefighters across the nation, I think, make up close to 60 percent of MDA, so that's to help with kids going to camp, that's with medicine, with research with everything and anything,” said CCFD Capt. Thomas Cruz.

The fire fighters will be at 18 different intersections on Friday, March 9th, Friday, March 16th and Friday, March 23rd from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. (times are approximate).

Funds raised through 2018 Corpus Christi Fill the Boot drives will help families with life-enhancing resources and support, including state-of-the-art support groups and Care Centers, including the MDA Care Center at Driscoll Children's Hospital. They also help give more than 50 local kids the opportunity to experience the "best week of the year where anything is possible" at MDA Summer Camp at no cost to their families at Camp Aranzazu in Rockport.

Firefighters across the country have been working with MDA to hold Fill the Boot campaigns for more than a 60 years.

CFFD says it costs $2,000 to send one child to the MDA summer camp.

Last year, CCFD was able to send 50 children to the camp, and are hoping to top that number this year.
