CC set to host 48th annual Youth Sailing World Championships

Posted: Updated:

Corpus Christi will be hosting a huge event this summer as the 48th Annual Youth Sailing World Championships will be in town.
That means some of the world's best young sailors will be here.

"There are 470 kids coming from approximately 80 countries with 150 coaches,"  field of play manager, Mark Foster told KZTV.

Last year's championship was held in China and this year, Corpus Christi, Texas beat out six other countries to host this prestigious event.

It's been 20 years since the United States has been the site of the World Championships; and thanks to the Yacht Club partnering up with US Sailing to put in a bid this past November, the Regatta is now set.

This event will have a huge economic impact locally, so that's good news for businesses especially around the Magee beach area.

"It'll have a million to a million and a half economic impact. If you come down to Magee Beach you will see all the boats there lined up on the shoreline. There will be roughly  170 boats lined up, in the morning and afternoon they'll be sailed off Magee Beach into the Bay anywhere from a half mile to 2 miles out in the Bay," Foster added.
