Alice PD hopes to fight car breakins with social media

Car burglaries are a continuing problem in Alice, Texas and the Alice Police Department hopes to combat that problem with social media.   Alice Police has kicked off its "9 pm Door Check" initiative.  The goal of the initiative is to remind citizens to be their own advocate when it comes to fighting crime.

With the help of Facebook and its other social media accounts, Alice PD will post a nightly reminder at 8:59 p.m. to followers to lock their vehicles and remove valuable items.  They believe this should deter would-be thieves from targeting those vehicles.

"The purpose of the program is to take that first step, that first initiative in protecting your property. And a kind of self-check," explained Patrol Officer Raul Valadez with Alice Police Department.

A security app that's become popular in other cities and communities is 'NextDoor'.  APD are encouraging residents there to also use the app to know what's going on in their neighborhood.
