TxDOT preparing for icy roads

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI -

The Texas Department of Transportation is gearing up for icy conditions overnight.

TxDOT spokesperson Rickey Dailey says his department is monitoring the situation and TxDOT crews will be ready to respond.

This afternoon, crews equipped their trucks with V-boxes filled with a sand-gravel mix. Their trucks are stationed at maintenance yards in Kingsville, Alice, Robstown, Corpus Christi, Sinton and George West. The v-box allows them to spread the sand-gravel mix on the roadways.

"The rock that you see there, if we disburse it early into the surface, the traffic will spread it out, get it off the lanes, then it is not useful, if we detect freezing conditions, on our roadway, that's when our trucks go out and spread the rock," said Rickey Dailey.

Starting at 9pm, the sand/gravel mixture will be spread on bridges, over-passes and elevated structures. If needed, the crews will work on just one highway lane at a time to help keep traffic moving.

Work is expected to start at the Harbor Bridge, Thursday night.
