Local man collecting storm debris to remodel home

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI - Residents in the Barcelona Estates subdivision near Kostoryz are concerned about a potential hazard in the area.

There are hundreds of wood planks stacked and scattered in one resident's front yard.

"I come here and process it by taking out all the nails and stuff," Austin Howell said.

Howell said he's remodeling the interior of his home and landscaping his yard with wood he finds around town.

The problem? It's been sitting in plain view for months.

Residents in the area say they're fed up with looking at the clutter.

"You know it's a concern with the kids whenever they're running down the street or anything like that, and it's just an eye sore. It's horrible to come into the neighborhood and it's right there at the beginning," a concerned parent said.

However, Howell said he doesn't mind a little push back from his neighbors, because one man's trash is another man's treasure.

"Some people see it just as waste, but it's not really. If you have to go buy it, it's pretty expensive," Howell said.

Code Enforcement Superintendent David Prado said the department is aware of the issue and a solution is in the works.

"What is out there? What violations are there? What concerns are there and what also can we do to help in the situation?," Officer Prado said.

Austin Howell said he was given a seven-day notice from Code Enforcement instructing him to remove the debris from his yard and driveway.

That seven days expires Friday, December 8th.

At that time, if the piles are not removed, Howell will be cited for "Litter and Solid Waste Accumulation."

If he is able to have the clutter moved to a more private area, such as his backyard, he will be granted an extension.

Howell said he has a few words for his neighbors...

"Hey, if you want to come volunteer your time to help me clean and process it, if it bothers you that much, you can."
