Mexican national sentenced for trafficking drugs through area

Posted: Updated:

A Mexican national has been sent to federal prison for trafficking marijuana in the area, Abe Martinez, Acting U.S. Attorney announced.

Ismael Padron-Garcia pleaded guilty to the charges on Aug. 3. He was sentenced to serve 24 months yesterday in federal court by U.S. District Judge Janis Graham Jack.

As Padron-Garcia is not a U.S. Citizen, he is expected to face deportation proceedings following his release from prison, according to a release by the Department of Justice.

It was back on May 15, 2017 when law enforcement officials responded to the scene of suspected illegal aliens on a train that was stopped just two miles north of the Refugio County line on Highway 77. Padron-Garcia ran from the scene when authorities arrived and was caught shortly after in a nearby cornfield, the release states.

Officials found several bundles of marijuana, totaling nearly 206 kilograms (about 454 pounds), inside the train. An investigation later linked Padron-Garcia to the bundles.

Padron-Garcia has been and will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.

Border Patrol, Drug Enforcement Administration, the Union Pacific Railroad Police and the Refugio County Sheriff's Office conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda L. Gould is prosecuting the case.
