Congressman Blake Farenthold pledges to repay public funds that settled claim

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI -

Congressman Blake Farenthold made headlines for using taxpayer money to settle a discrimination lawsuit, and now he plans to pay it back.

"Even though I was completely exonerated by OCE...and the settlement agreement has been paid...I'm doing my best and am going to hand a check over this week...probably to Speaker Ryan or somebody and say look, here's the amount of my settlement, give it back to the taxpayers.  I want to be clear that I didn't do anything wrong.  But, I also don't want the taxpayers to be on the hook for this and I want to be able to talk about it and fix the system without people saying Blake, you benefitted from the system, you don't have a right to talk about it or fix it," Farenthold told Action 10 News.

The lawsuit was filed by Lauren Greene, a former communications director for Farenthold.  The 2014 lawsuit alleged that Greene was sexually harassed, and fired not long after complaining of a hostile work environment.

According to the website "Politico," Farenthold's lawsuit cost $84,000 in taxpayer funds.

Farenthold was cleared of any wrongdoing by the Office of Congressional Ethics.
