Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI - (Update, 9:40 a.m.) A woman who was hit by a car and killed while walking on the Crosstown Expressway overnight has been identified.

It was around 1 a.m. when dispatch received calls about 30-year-old Rosalee Garcia walking down the freeway. Before officers could arrive, Garcia had been hit by multiple vehicles. Officers say they believe Garcia died on impact.

This is the 38th traffic fatality this year, according to Lt. Timothy Frazier with the CCPD. He says these accidents have become too common.

"We've had a lot of pedestrian crashes and fatals this year and that's something that's kind of worrisome and something we're looking into," Lt. Frazier said.

A stretch of the freeway was closed while officers investigated the scene.

It is unknown why Garcia was walking in the lanes of the freeway.
