KZTV's John Rupolo with local reaction - Congressman Farenthold's settles sex harassment suit with your money

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI -

The national headlines weren't even dry when the news hit the Coastal Bend. Congressman Blake Farenthold using 84 thousand dollars of taxpayer money to settle a sexual harassment case against him. And the reaction from some in Corpus Christi tonight wasn't a surprise.

"This was wrong," said one Corpus Christi resident.,

It was back in 2014 Farenthold's former communications director Lauren Green filed a lawsuit alleging Farenthold used sexually charged comments designed to gauge whether Green was interested in a sexual relationship. Farenthold publicly denied the allegations. But in 2015, the lawsuit went away and no one knew until today it was settled with a payout of 84 thousand dollars of taxpayer money.

"Taxpayer money should go to what taxpayers are expecting it to go to which is bettering our city, bettering our roads," said one resident.

According to reports, Farenthold is the first member of Congress to have used a little known Treasury Department fund to cover workplace settlements involving lawmakers. Farenthold released this statement.

"While I 100% support more transparency with respect to claims against members of congress, i can neither confirm nor deny that settlement involved my office as the congressional accountability act prohibits me from answering that question,"

Off the hook at least for public comments perhaps but maybe not of the hook with voters.

"We know who to vote for next time," said one resident..
