Acres of old golf course scorched in brush fire

CORPUS CHRISTI -

Firefighters responded to a large brush fire that scored a good portion of an old golf course Thursday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 12:20 p.m. at the old Pharaoh Valley golf course located near Nile.

When firefighters arrived at the scene they found about a half acre of tall grass and brush engulfed in flames.

Firefighters say they had some trouble battling the flames because the fire was in an area that was difficult to get to, plus the windy conditions that made it worse.

Flames were moving in the direction of some nearby homes, but firefighters say they were never in any danger.

"I was a little concerned, my neighbor went, went knocking on my door, ah started, we pulled the water hose out, we started to water down the ground, prepared just in case it come this way," said Bert Gonzalez, a nearby resident.

Firefighters say the flames scorched about four acres of land on the old golf course.

Fire investigators are still trying to figure out what started the fire.
