Action 10 has learned new details in the case of a man charged in the murder of an Alice police officer that happened over 40 years ago.

During a news conference that was held Monday morning, investigators said Texas Rangers focused their attention on the man accused, 70-year-old Roberto Lopez, back in January of this year.

Lopez is currently serving a sentence for armed robbery in Alabama.

Authorities say he became a suspect in the murder of Officer Matthew Murphy because of statements from a witnesses, including what investigators described as a "jail house snitch."

Lopez is accused of fatally shooting Officer Murphy during a traffic stop back on December 1, 1974.

The next step is to present the case to the Jim Wells County District Attorney's Office, and begin the extradition process for Lopez if there is an indictment.
