Refugio football coach helping to rebuild the community

Posted: Updated:

Before Hurricane Harvey hit, all the talk one ever heard about was Bobcat football.

But now, the town is in great despair, the city has to  rebuild.

The thought of football was taking a back seat to cleanup and repair

But not  for Refugio football coach Jason Herring. His goal of  repeating as Class 2A champs hasn't changed.

"Our goals have not changed. We plan on winning state at being at ATT stadium I will tell you this,  my time is way different than its ever been," said Herring.

That's because coach Herring has assumed a leadership roll in helping to rebuild the city

"But on my spare time instead of spending it with my family and wife, I'm spending it on trying to help this community," said Herring.

One of  Herring's first jobs  was to raise money and organize a group of contractors to rebuild this home.that was totally destroyed by Hurricane Harvey, and just weeks later, the families Casey, a junior on the Refugio football team broke 2 vertebrae in his neck in a Friday night game. The family is praying that he will be able to walk again.

"We've raised over $40,000 in three weeks, to completely rebuild their home. And that, those are all blessings from God. I mean it's just been immense, people have opened up their checkbooks, opened up their hearts," said Herring.

So whether it be coaching on the football field, or coaching contractors and clean up workers; his time is all dedicated to the community.

"I've tried to dedicate every single second that's not for football to helping with Casey of some family member in this town," added Herring.

And with that work ethic, Refugio just may win it's fifth State Championship in the school's history.
