Crossing guard funding dispute

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI -

There's been some dispute over how to spend over $300,000 that's helped pay for crossing guards at CCISD and Flour Bluff ISD.

The money is left over from the red light camera program that was collected through tickets issued to drivers. CCPD's Police Chief Mike Markle made the recommendation to end the program and city council approved to discontinue it back in April.

When the program ended, CCISD's Police Chief Kirby Warnke claims the district was told they city would continue funding the crossing-guard program with the money left over from the red light program.

According to Carolynn Vaughn and other city council members, they believe the city should have stopped paying for the crossing-guard program last school year. "I certainly want them to have crossing guards, but I think they should pay for it. Not the city," said Vaughn.

The funds left over from the red light camera program are expected to run out next Fall.
