Late, but welcoming start for ACISD students

ARANSAS COUNTY -

October 11th might seem like a late start for the school year and technically it is, but the Rockport community has come together and were beyond ready to get their school year started.

At the Live Oak Learning Center, the welcoming committee was out in full force for the local children.

"I had mothers that were hugging me tight as the kids, just happy to be home, happy to be at Rockport, back at their home school," Robin Rice, the Principal of Live Oak said.

Against all odds, these children are returning to breathe new life into this educational building.

"We've all just rallied and linked arms and we are excited to have our babies back," said Jill Wilson, and intervention specialist for Rockport.

There were smiling faces and excited teachers everywhere on the Live Oak Learning center campus.

"It's just being back to normal, nothing's been normal since we've been back. So, I'm just glad to be here and here with the kids and give them hugs," said Katherine Buckley, a first grade inclusion teacher.

Along with lots of hugs, incoming students will get plenty of support from staff.

"All of our counselors have worked  together to make sure our most fragile students, whether they are just emotionally fragile or they are still dealing with home issues because of the hurricane, they are prepared to help those students," said principal Rice.

"They've been through a lot, we've all been through a lot, so we are just going to make sure everyone is doing all right," added Jill Wilson.

It was a fantastic first day of school.  Students in Port Aransas will begin their first day of school next Monday.
