If it feels like this hurricane season has been abnormally active, it's because it has been. Ophelia has become the 10th consecutive Atlantic storm to become a hurricane this season. This ties the record for most consecutive Atlantic storms turning into hurricanes. This has only occurred three other times since we started keeping record of these storms. The original record was set was set 1878 and matched again in 1886 and 1893.

Luckily, Ophelia poses no threat to the U.S. The storm could brush past the Azores this weekend before weakening into a post-tropical depression and impacting the coast of Ireland early next week.
