Troubleshooters: Son's Truck

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI -

To you and I it looks like another white pick-up truck.  But to Estela Rodela it's another cherished memory of her late son Orlando. "I still can't get in that truck.  It's very difficult for me to do so," she admitted.

Orlando passed away from a long illness in 2015.  He was 28 years old.  And because they were so close, the plan was to have Orlando's truck completely repaired and given to his nephew.

So early in 2016 the Rodela's took the white 2001 Ford Ranger to Staples Tire and Automotive on Ayers and told them to fix it..  "Take your time.  We're in no rush," Rodela remembers telling them.  But over the next several months Mrs. Rodela told the Troubleshooters, they had to take the truck back to the shop twice.

It wasn't running right.  And then on August 24th, with Hurricane Harvey bearing down on the Coastal Bend, the real test came.  The Rodela's packed up the truck and began evacuating to Freer.  "It was between San Diego and Freer.  I saw like a smoke cloud.  And it didn't look right to me."

The truck was breaking down.  "And I saw something splattered on the back tire.  On the wheel," she recalled.  The Rodela's eventually had it towed to a mechanic's shop in Freer.

It's still there today.  The question now is who's going to pay for the tow from San Diego to Freer?  From Freer to Corpus Christi?  And who's responsibility is it to pay to have it fixed?

She estimates they've already paid Staples $2,600 to fix the truck before this latest breakdown.  "They knew that it had sentimental value to me.  They knew it belonged to my son."

The Troubleshooters did speak with Oscar Cisneros, manager of the shop on Ayers.  "If it was fixed here, according to her and you, is it the business's responsibility then to pay for the towing and for the repairs?  "If everything is under warranty, sure," said Cisneros.  And anything you do I'm imagining, there's a warranty on it, correct ?  "Yes."  So it would have to be taken care of by the business?  Right?
