Toddler critically injured in crash faces long road to recovery

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI -

A local family is doing everything they can to stay strong following a devastating crash that critically injured a 2-year-old boy and killed his mother.

The crash happened a couple of weeks ago at the intersection of Yorktown and Staples.

Cops say a speeding driver ran a red light and slammed into Amanda Saldana's SUV as she was turning.

Sadly, Amanda was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Karen Smith, a family friend of Amanda tells Action 10 News her family has been heartbroken since the crash.

Smith says Amanda was both a loving wife and mother.

As Amanda's family tries to cope with her loss, they remain by her son Ezra's side.

Ezra, Amanda's 2-year-old son, was found unconscious following the accident and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

He suffered traumatic brain injury in the crash, and is battling day in and day out to recover.

"He continues to make great progress, but he's not the same baby he was before the accident, which makes it so much harder for Kory and the family to grieve the loss of their beloved Amanda, but Amanda would want them right by his side and that's what they're doing, they're going to be as strong as they can for Ezra," said Smith.

Kory, Amanda's husband and Ezra's father, is currently not working while he cares for his son.

Thursday, PLAY located at 7426 S Staples St. will be donating 100% of admission proceeds to Ezra's fight.

Robert Binderim, the man accused of causing the deadly crash remains behind bars.

He faces several charges including manslaughter, injury to a child and assault.
