A couple's good intentions to help a stranded driver ended with a man behind bars and elderly man injured.
It happened Friday night just before 11 p.m. near Dillon Ln. and Gollihar Rd.
Police say Councilwoman Lucy Rubio and her husband were headed to her sister's house that night when they noticed a car in the middle of the road and woman standing on the side of the road.
Councilwoman Rubio and her husband stopped to try and help. Unfortunately, Rubio and her husband were the ones who ended up needing help.
When they stopped, Rubio's 66-year-old husband approached the woman to ask if she needed help.
Police say the woman yelled at her husband saying they didn't need help and they better not be calling police.
The woman saw that Councilwoman Rubio was on her phone, walked up to her and took it away.
Rubio's husband then went to the woman, placed his hands on her shoulders and asked for the phone back.
Police say a man sitting in the car saw Rubio's husband contacting the woman, charged at him and punched him in the face twice.
"It was a nightmare. I have never in my life experienced something horrifying like this, and we stop to render aid a lot. I see her husband running, literally charging, and the next thing I know, he sucker punched my husband," said Rubio.
Rubio says her husband suffered a bloody swollen nose, and will now have to go to the doctor because he is having issues with his nose and vision.
Officers arrested 26-year-old Shawn Villareal for public intoxication and injuring an elderly person.
