Teen charged in shooting death of sister he claims was accidental

Posted: Updated:

GRETNA, La. (AP) - A 15-year-old boy faces a negligent homicide charge in the death of his 14-year-old sister in a New Orleans suburb.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says in a news release that the shooting happened around 12:35 a.m. Friday at a residence in the Westwego area. The grandmother of the victim told investigators her 15-year-old grandson ran into her room in a panic, saying he had accidentally shot his sister.

The boy later told investigators he was in the girl's bedroom, handling a gun that he said he had bought on the street. He told investigators the gun discharged. The girl was struck in the head.

The boy's name wasn't released. He was taken to Jefferson Parish's Juvenile Assessment Center.
