Wind Turbine Construction Underway at Texas A&M Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI - Construction of twelve new wind turbines is now underway at three locations near the Texas A&M Corpus Christi campus. Three of the pillars went up on Friday during the first stage of construction of the twelve vertical axis wind turbines.
The turbines won't look like the wind farms out in San Patricio County. The CEO of the 3ewerks says the turbines unusual appearance isn't the only thing that makes them different from other turbines.
"Ours spin on a vertical axis, so what that means is they take wind in any direction so they are much more efficient at producing energy," says Brian Loftin.
Not only are these wind turbines helping the campus go green, but it's also helping engineering students study green technology.
Loftin says, "It's a motorized tower that tilts. So what that is going to give them is the ability to study the design of these turbines, designs of the generators, and simply try and put something together better if they can."
Both students and professors at the university are excited about being able to get some hands on experience with this unique design.
Engineering student Lucas Schulte says, "It will be great because what I actually plan on doing when I get some work experience is actually work for a renewable energy resource company."
Rafael Fox, an Instructor of Engineering, believes that this technology will give students an advantage when it comes to finding a job. "They can see how the actual product works versus just seeing it in theory, is a big difference for students," Fox told us.
The wind turbines are expected to be completed by the end of the month.
The project is being funded by a $955,000 grant awarded by the State Energy Conservation Office.
