Water Line Break Floods Poenisch Drive Home

CORPUS CHRISTI - One local resident's Super Bowl Sunday was ruined after a wall of water erupted in his backyard on Poenisch Drive. Peter Melve shot video of the geyser coming out of a water line in his backyard around 11:00 a.m.
The waters flooded his backyard, pool and home before a city crew showed up two and a half hours later to turn off the supply.
The flooding ruined several pieces of furniture, carpets and his children's toys.
"We were sitting her enjoying our Sunday morning, when we noticed a 5 foot gusher coming out of the backyard," Melve told us, "it looked like a Biblical scene, the water just came pouring out and engulfed the entire backyard."
Melve says he called 911 immediately as he was unsure who could help him with the problem.
"For two and a half hours, I called the City's Water line, they're emergency line, trying to get them to come out and turn off the water, and they wouldn't come out," said Melve.
Finally a crew with the city's water department showed up and began working in the backyard, by now a swamp.
We're told the pipe might have busted due to an excess of storm water drainage and now Melve says he worries the city is trying to back out of paying for the damage done.
He told us a water department official called it a 'natural' event and his insurance agent says he's not covered.
"I'm pretty frustrated, I'm pretty sure things are going to work out. The city will end up taking care of this, even if we have to take them to court," said Melve.
So far we have not received a comment from a water department official on what exactly caused the break and who is liable for the damages.
