For Sports Director Tyler Garrett, sports aren't just his job, instead they're a way of life. An award winning journalist he has been recognized multiple times by the Texas Associated Press, winning awards including the 2008 & 2011 Best Sports Story in the State. He was also the 2012 American Cancer Society National Media Award Winner.
It was in elementary school when he first decided that sports were going to be his career. Of course at the age he first planned to go pro first, and then after making the hall of fame he would go on to being analyst. Well playing professionally may not have happened but he is now covering sports for a living, and loving every minute of it!
And even though the Houston native never got paid to play, he did manage to earn himself a basketball scholarship to Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, IA. And it just so happened that Iowa was where Tyler also got his start in TV, as following up his basketball career he began working for the local NBC affiliate. Starting at the bottom with no experience, he quickly learned the tricks of the trade and worked his way into an on air position while still finishing up his degree in Mass Communications.
Following graduation Tyler headed back to the Lone Star State, accepting a Sports Reporter position with the CBS affiliate in Waco, TX. While in Big 12 country he had the opportunity to follow the University of Texas Longhorns Football team to the Rose Bowl, as well as traveling with the Baylor Baseball team to the Super Regionals. Plus Waco plays host to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, so that gave him the opportunity to talk one on one with a number of living legends.
But he now calls Corpus Christi and News 6 home. Living by the water and covering sports is a dream come true! Tyler is the oldest of 3 siblings, and views his parents as the real heroes in his life. They have been right there by him through his toughest times.
In his free time you can find Tyler working out, playing basketball, golf, tennis, or fishing.
