Troubleshooters: Sewage Problems at Casa de Santa Fe Apts

CORPUS CHRISTI - Vernon Jones has cell phone video to prove what he's talking about, raw sewage backing up into his Casa De Santa Fe apartment, and it's a mess. When the system backs up the foul mess spills onto the floor and creates more of a mess for Jones. The sewage comes out of the toilet and the shower drain.
"They even took the walls apart in the apartment next door and they came in here and took everything apart. Flushed and everything and was doing just fine, but like I said later that night it started happening again," he told us.
That's what frustrates Jones. A plumber unclogged the drain yesterday, but Jones knows sooner or later it will back up again. In fact he says it's gotten so bad he wont allow his children to stay with him because the smell in his apartment is so bad it's unsanitary. So he wants out of his lease.
Management declined our request for an on-camera interview, but they did say they've offered to move Mr. Jones to another apartment and replace his carpet, but he's declined. He says he wants to move away from the complex. "I just asked 'em to let me out my lease so I can get somewhere that's where I can be able to stay that ain't like this," Jones said.
Tally Torres, the manager, told us Jones can move out, as soon as he pays his pro-rated January rent.
As for the backed-up sewage, Torres says tenants may be causing the problem, so she's posted a notice which says flushing items like sanitary napkins, paper towels, and baby wipes clogs the toilets. It can lead to a $50 fine.
Jones says he'll let us know what his next move will be.
