CORPUS CHRISTI - Traveling for the holidays should take a little less time in 2012.
TXDOT announced this week that the speed limits will rise to 75 on most Coastal Bend highways, from Tivoli to Alice To Kingsville.
Engineering and speed limit studies earlier this year showed the higher speed limits could be safely posted, according to a TXDOT news release.
As a result, the Texas Transportation Commission increased the speed limit on sections of roadway in primarily rural and unincorporated areas in nine Coastal Bend counties at its meeting in October.
"TXDOT crews are now installing signs with the new 75 mph speed limit throughout the Corpus Christi District and drivers should see them soon in their area," said Lonnie Gregorcyk, P.E., District Engineer for the TxDOT Corpus Christi District.
The new speed limits do not take effect until the 75 mph signs are posted.
In the Coastal Bend, the new speed limit will be posted on:
• IH 37 in Nueces County. IH 37 was posted for 75 mph in Live Oak and San Patricio counties earlier this year.
• US 59 - From Live Oak County through Goliad County
• US 77 - From Refugio County through Kleberg County
• US 181 - From Normanna, north of Beeville, to Gregory in San Patricio County
• US 183 - From State Highway 239 south of Goliad to Refugio
• US 281 - South of George West through Jim Wells County
• SH 35 - From Tivoli to Gregory
• SH 44 - From Corpus Christi through Jim Wells County
• SH 141 - From Kingsville to US 281
• SH 188 - In San Patricio County, from Farm Road 1069 to US 77
• SH 239 - From US 183 south of Goliad to Tivoli
• SH 359 - From SH 44 near Alice to Skidmore in Bee County
TXDOT advises drivers that the speed limit is not increasing in cities along these roadways.
However, the speed limit is increasing to 70 mph on short sections of US 77 and SH 44 in Robstown and to 65 mph on a section of US 77 in Bishop.
