CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - A total of 32 players from 20 area schools comprise the inaugural edition of the South Texas Pre-Season High School All-Star Softball Team. The student-athletes will be recognized at the Eighth Annual South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet, presented by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and ClearChannel Radio, on Wednesday, January 25, at the Omni Bayfront Hotel.

The large-school division (Classes 4A and 5A) features 14 players from nine schools and is balanced, with no more than two players from any one campus. Tuloso-Midway and Moody, two schools that advanced to the 4A regional semi-finals last year, placed two players on the team, along with Port Lavaca Calhoun, a 4A regional quarter-finals participant. Carroll and Victoria West also slotted two players each, with Calallen, Gregory-Portland, King and Victoria East placing one on the squad.

The small-school division (1A/2A/3A/private) honors 18 players from 11 schools. Santa Gertrudis Academy, a 2A regional finalist last season, leads the way with four selections, followed by George West, Hebbronville, John Paul II and Sinton with two apiece. Other schools represented on the team include Aransas Pass, Ingleside, Orange Grove, Port Aransas, Rockport-Fulton and Taft.

Votes were received from 26 high school coaches and selected media throughout South Texas.

Tickets for the January 25 event are priced at $50 and are available by contacting the Hooks at 361-561-HOOK. Corporate table sponsorships for the banquet and the Astros CAREavan Luncheon, slated for Friday, February 3, are also available. Proceeds from both events benefit Hooks Help.
