CORPUS CHRISTI -- Professional women's football has arrived in our area. The CC Mermaids are a new female team holding tryouts this weekend at the 300 Block of Louisiana Ave in Corpus Christi (map). The next tryout is Sunday June 26 from 7:00-9:00 in the morning.
The squad is set to play in a format similar to the Lingerie Football League, in an association that will be unveiled in October, according to Texas Cowgirls team owner Rebecca Garza.
"Right now our team in San Antonio is hoping to host a scrimmage against the Mermaids in July."
Garza said that Corpus Christi's team will join a potential nine other franchises for the inagrual 2012 season.
"Other than Corpus Christi, we plan on having teams in Kansas City, St. Louis, Houston, Louisiana, Austin, Laredo, San Antonio, Mexico City, and Monterrey."
The Mermaids plan on playing their home games in the American Bank Center.
"There would be such a big outcome to watch us play there," said King graduate Cynghia Garza. "To play in an arena, wow. Yes, we can do it."
"I told my mom I was going to run away to play football, but it came to me," said Ben Bolt graduate Celest Ruiz. "It's like a dream."
"Now that I'm 22, and out of college, it gives me something to do in my free time, and we're all here to show that we can play football, too," said King graduate Lauren McClure.
The girls that came to Saturday's tryout said playing in a league that shows a little skin doesn't leave the players exposed, it makes them feel empowered to compete in a game typically reserved for men.
"We can be tough, and still look good doing it," said Ruiz.
Garza added," I'm comfortable with that (the volleyball shorts) rather than the lingerie (referring to the more feminine apparrell). "I've seen them, and I thought 'I can work with that'."
Right now Corpus Christi's up-and-coming team needs numbers to fill the jerseys. The Mermaids will hold another tryout session Sunday June 26 from 7:00-9:00 in the morning at the 300 block of Louisiana.
"We need a lot more girls to come out. Once we get more girls, we can prove that women can play this game, too."
