CORPUS CHRISTI - Outfielder J.D. Martinez has been selected as the Hooks 2011 Player of the Year. His accomplishments will be recognized at the eighth annual South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet early next year.
Martinez, 24, ranked second in the Texas League in batting (.338) at the time of his promotion and, despite missing the final five weeks of the season, led the Hooks in 10 offensive categories. On July 30, Martinez became just the second Hooks position player in franchise history to get the call straight to Houston in the wake of the Hunter Pence trade with Philadelphia.
In 88 games this year with the Hooks, Martinez hit .338 (107x317) with 13 home runs and 72 RBIs. In addition to leading the Hooks in those three statistical categories, Martinez also led the club in hits (107), doubles (25), total bases (173), on-base percentage (.414), slugging percentage (.546), OPS (.959) and sacrifice flies (7).
A 20th-round selection of the Astros in 2009 out of Nova Southeastern University in Florida, Martinez set a franchise record when he knocked in runs in nine consecutive games (April 11-21). He broke the previous record of RBIs in eight straight games, set by Pence during the 2006 season.
Corpus Christi's left fielder posted hitting streaks of 14, 12 and 11 games and had the club's longest consecutive-games on-base streak at 22. Martinez also tied for the longest road hitting streak in the circuit in 2011 at 15 games, a mark he shared with Springfield's Charlie Cutler.
Martinez was twice named the Texas League's Player of the Week (June 27-July 3 and July 11-17) and, on June 29 in San Antonio, went 2-for-4 with a double to help the South Stars defeat the North 3-2 in the league's annual All-Star game.
The Astros' Player Development Department selected Martinez as Corpus Christi's July offensive player of the month. In 26 July games, Martinez batted .380 with eight doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 26 RBIs, posting a 1.191 OPS in the process.
In addition to all of the above, Martinez hit .355 in 41 road games, batted .392 for the year with runners in scoring position and went 3-for-5 with the bases loaded, which included a pair of grand slam home runs.
In his major league debut July 30 at Milwaukee, Martinez appeared as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and provided an RBI double off Marco Estrada. In 45 games with the Astros through Monday night, Martinez is hitting .273 with 12 doubles, five home runs and 31 RBIs.
