CORPUS CHRISTI - In this week's Kitchen Cops we have two near perfect scores at local restaurants, but one Port Aransas seafood place dropped to the bottom with our low score of the week.

We begin with the Olive Garden at 5258 S. Padre Island Drive with a score of 97. The inspector only noticed gnats buzzing around the restaurant, but did not mention the source of the insects.

Also on the A-list is the Fruit King at 4702 Ayers which also scored a 97. The inspection notes some rodent droppings were found on the floor.

On the B-list is the Church's Fried Chicken at 5149 Weber Road where the inspector issued a score of 88. The inspector noticed employees were not wearing nair nets or beard restraints, also there was no soap or towels at the hand washing sink.

Papa John's Pizza at 13434 Leopard Street also made the B-list with a score of 87. The pizza place employee's were seen drinking out of cups without lids, the cleaning products were not labeled, there was no manager on duty with a food handlers license, and the back door needed to be fixed.

The C-List starts of with Marty's Grill at 2833 S. Padre Island Drive, inside the Trade Center, where the inspector issued a score of 79. The restaurant lost points for employees not eating in designated areas, their hair nets were being stored with the eating utensils, the stored food wasn't properly labeled, and mold was found inside the ice machine.

It may be cold outside, but that does not mean inspectors are not keeping tabs on a shaved ice vendors inside the Trade Center. The Sno-Ball King at 2833 S. Padre Island Drive earned a score of 77 this week. Inspectors caught employees wearing open toed shoes, the ice scoop was not stored properly, there were no towels in the hand washing sink, rodent droppings were found inside the business, there were not enough thermometers in the freezers, the cotton candy machine was dirty, and the ice cream freezer hadn't been defrosted in some time.

Our low score this week goes to Jay's Seafood at 709 S. Alister in Port Aransas. The business was given a score of 76 after inspectors found a slew of violations. Employees were not wearing hair nets as required, but were wearing jewelry, which is not allowed. The paper cups in the business were beings stored on the floor while leftover food was not stored properly. There was no soap or towels found at the hand washing sink. The inspector also noticed rodent droppings in the dry storage. Cleaning chemicals were not labeled properly.

When we stopped into Jay's Seafood to inquire about the violations we were greeted by a very pleasant employee who appeared ready to help us with anything.

However, that was not the case.

We came by after lunch time and asked to speak with the manager, but were told the cook, who is also the owner, was busy in the kitchen at the time. She refused to come out of the kitchen to talk to us. We were also told a manager was not on duty at the time.
