CORPUS CHRISTI - There's another tie this week in the top spot of Kitchen Cops. The McDdonald's at 2021 Morgan Avenue was given a 100 by the inspector who noted the restrooms were "exceptionally clean." Schlotzky's Deli at 4218 Alameda also earned a 100 when the inspectors didn't find anything wrong in both the kitchen and dining areas.
Lower on the A-list is Pizza Hut at 3657 Leopard Street with a score 97. The restaurant lost 3-points because inspectors found an employee with an expired food handler's license.
Just one point lower we find the Mandarin Garden at 4138 S. Staples. The inspector gave a score of 96 because stored foods were not labeled properly.
Dropping down to the B-list, Jason's Deli at 5325 Saratoga Blvd. with an 89. The restaurant barely missed our A-list after inspectors deducted points after seeing employees wearing wristbands in the kitchen, a pickle container was not properly covered, and some of the dirty pans weren't being washed thoroughly.
Peter Piper Pizza at 4985 Ayers scored an 86. The restaurant lost points because employees were drinking out of cups that had no lids, they were using cups without handles to pour food in the kitchen, there was no soap at the hand washing sink, and there was mold in the ice machine.
This week's low score goes to Enrique's at 5230 Kostoryz with a score of 78. Inspectors found a slew of violations including employees wearing jewelry and not hair nets, the stored food wasn't labeled, there were no towels in the men's restroom, some cleaning supplies were being kept way too close to the food, and the kitchen microwave was dirty.
When we arrived at Enrique's to ask about their recent inspection we soon found out that a manager was expecting us. However, we were not welcome in the restaurant. The manager was talking on the phone, but put that person on hold to share her thoughts.
"You know what? I'm very interested in this, I just first want to say that I'm very proud of our restaurant and the conditions that we keep it in. And I've been waiting for you guy, honestly, because I want to say, shame on you. And the reason being is that we're mom and pop restaurants and we're trying very hard," the manager told us.
Despite our requests for comments about the inspector's report the manager didn't stray from her point.
"Is there anything you can say about the stuff that they found, it wasn't even a terrible score, we just kind of wanted..." reporter Mitch Bryan asked.
"No, it's not a terrible score, but my point is that this is public information and if anyone wants to know, they can go online before they choose to eat here," the manger told us.
"Which is why we're doing this," replied Bryan.
"However, you all tend to amplify everything and you make everything seem worse than it truly is, because of the way you guys word it," said the manager.
It quickly became clear that we weren't going to get any answers about the violations inspectors found.
"I don't think I really need to answer any questions, if anybody really cares to know, they can watch it Thursday, because that's when you air it. And they can make the decision themselves as to whether they want to eat in my establishment or not," the manager concluded.
