CORPUS CHRISTI - Topping the A-list in this week's Kitchen Cops is a three way tie at 97 between Kiko's, a Subway and a McDonald's.
At Kiko's Mexican restaurant on Everhart the health inspector only noticed that spray bottles were not labeled properly, plus the kitchen walls and grill hoods needed to be dusted.
The Subway at 1502 Airline was notified cleaning chemicals should not be sitting right next to a batch of clean spoons.
The management inside the McDonald's at 1250 Flour Bluff Drive was informed they needed to post the grease-trap pick up receipts.
Starting off our B-list with a score of 89 is Licha's Fruit Cups at 5007 Everhart. Employees were seen wiping their hands on dirty aprons,
the restaraunt needed a dipping well with cold running water for the ice cream scoops and food manager was not present.
The Sonic at 4801 S. Staples also earned a score of 89. Inspectors caught employees not washing their hands in between tasks in the kitchen,
they were also caught wearing jewelry and wristbands. The inspector did note finding mold found inside the ice machine.
Jumping down to our C-list is the Great American Cookie Company inside La Palmera mall with a score of 79. Health inspectors found a slew of violations: employees were not washing their hands before putting on new gloves, they were not wearing hair nets, they were caught wearing jewelry, the stored food was not properly labeled, the hand washing sink was blocked, there was no food manager present, the walk-in cooler needed a thermometer and employees were seen drinking out of cups without lids.
Wrapping up our C-list is Small Planet Gourmet at 3812 S. Alameda which also earned a score of 79. Inspectors say they saw employees not washing their hands when switching kitchen tasks, employees were all wiping their hands on the same towel, dishwashers were using the same dirty towel to dry all of the washed dishes, there were rodent droppings found inside the business, the cleaning chemicals were not stored properly, the inside of the ice machine was dirty, staff was using the wrong kinds of scoops to pour salad dressing, the kitchen can opener was filthy and the ice scoop was not properly stored.
With all of the businesses in this week's report earning similar scores, it seems only fitting that we have a tie for the low score as well.
Mitch Bryan stopped in at the Subway near La Palmera mall and the Bull Chicks on Alameda to see how the employees may have taken care of violations seen during their inspection. Both earned scores of 74 this week.
The inspection report from the Subway at 4910 S. Staples noted food was not being kept at the right temperature, the soup was not being reheated quickly enough, employees were seen wearing jewelry, the cleaning chemical bottles were not labeled, there weren't enough thermometers in the coolers and the inside of the microwave was in need of a good wipe down.
It was just before lunch when Mitch stopped in to speak with a manager. He explained, "All this jewelry... I had a new girl come in with jewelry and the health inspector actually happened to come in. Everything has been corrected."
He added that he expected to score much higher on the next inspection.
The Bull Chicks at 4360 S. Alameda earned the same score this week. The inspectors say they found the food was not being kept at the correct temperature, employees were caught not washing their hands in between kitchen tasks, instead they were seen wiping their hands on their dirty aprons. Also, the ice scoop was not stored properly, there were rodent droppings found inside, the employee medications were not stored in the correct place, the ice and soda machine needed to be cleaned, the air conditioning filter also needed to be wiped off and a raw wood shelf being used in the kitchen needed to be painted for cleanliness-sake.
Again Mitch stopped into the restaurant right before lunchtime. While the employees behind the counter were a bit shy about being on camera, they did talk to us about the violations health inspectors found.
The Bull Chicks manager told us, "Everything on here has been taken care of, we've already had people come and take care of the droppings we've already had people come and spray." The manager also showed us the shelf that inspectors said needed to be painted, which has been taken care of.
The manger also expressed the belief that they will earn a better score when inspectors swing by again.
