CORPUS CHRISTI - An unusually high number of people left the Nueces County courthouse jury room earlier when more prospective jurors showed up than expected. Although the central jury room only has a capacity of 500, about 700 residents arrived to the courthouse.
"There were actually more people than chairs in there," said Stephen Fillmore, "I probably stood up for about two hours today before I got to sit down."
The overcrowding of people was actually caused by an improvement in the summons database. According to Nueces County Court Administrator, Anne Lorentzen, resident's addresses were updated on the list resulting in more successful mailings and, in return, more residents showing up for jury duty.
"I was called to show so I showed and it's part of your civil duty as a citizen right," said another prospective juror, Chris Casey, "There are a thousand things I'd rather be doing, but I was asked to be here so I came.
While most residents seemed understanding, Jason Wilson said he'd like a better system. "I think it's a waste of time," he said, "I know you get paid for this for coming in today but I make more money on the lot than I do here."
Although some residents are frustrated with the miscommunication, Lorentzen says that more people showing up for their civic duty is a good problem to have. Adjustments in the amount of summons sent out will help resolve this issue by next week.
