KINGSVILLE, Texas -- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team received a strong pitching performance Saturday afternoon en route to a 3-1 win to complete the 3-game sweep of Houston-Victoria. After the first two games on Friday were in Victoria, the series finale was at Nolan Ryan Field.
Matt Rhodes allowed just an unearned run on three hits in five innings of work. He struck out four batters while walking just one. Taylor Taska followed and tossed three scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Jeremy Flores tossed a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Kingsville struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the first. With two away, Chris Ballou singled and advanced around the bases to score on three straight walks to Clint Wallace, Matt Perez and Cash Barker by the Jaguars' Nick Falkenstein (1-3).
After the Jaguars tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the second, Kingsville took a two-run lead in the third.
Ballou doubled with one out in the bottom of the third. After advancing to third on a single by Clint Wallace, Ballou scampered home on a wild pitch by Falkenstine. Cash Barker made it a 3-1 contest when he drove Matt Perez in with a single.
Ballou had a game-high three hits to up his average to a team-best .429 on the season, while Joe Tallerine had two hits.
Kingsville is off until hosting Fisher College at Nolan Ryan Field March 9-10.
