Jackknife Crash Shuts Down Parts of I-37 South

CORPUS CHRISTI - A traffic accident on I-37 shut down part of the freeway or several hours Tuesday afternoon.
The accident happened near the top of the overpass on the southbound lane of I-37 over Port Avenue.
Because of that accident, police had to shut down a big chunk of the interstate from Nueces Bay Boulevard to the Crosstown Freeway. Police say slick roads from the rain are to blame for the accident.
Just before noon Tuesday, a pickup skidded on the wet road and clipped the rear of the 18-wheeler. That sent the big rig out of control, causing it jackknifed.
The rig crashed into a highway support beam that was holding an overhead traffic sign. The sign came crashing down on top of the rig.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was the only person taken to a local hospital
The wreckage took a while to clear from the highway. A special crane had to be brought in to lift the traffic sign from the rig before crews could even move the 18-wheeler.
There was also a diesel fuel spill to clean up. That took time, so police had to shut down both north and southbound sides of I-37 from Nueces Bay Boulevard to the Crosstown. Both sides of I-37 reopened just after 3 p.m.
The condition of the driver from 18-wheeler is unknown at the time. Police told us the driver of the pick-up was given a speeding ticket.
